Safeguarding the environment comes naturally to America’s pork producers because they understand their inherent responsibility to preserve natural resources for future generations.
Today, under the umbrella of environmental sustainability, Martin Family Farms has taken this public trust to the next level with their commitment to the four pillars of environmental sustainability—carbon footprint, water footprint, air footprint and land footprint.
The insights and innovations found will help Martin Family Farms maintain its role as a leader in protecting the natural resources they manage on their farms—one of the ethical principles of the pork industry’s We Care initiative they are committed to achieving.
Martin Family Farms is focused on delivering responsible and progressive environmental management to the farm. This includes strategies to reduce odor, protect water resources and enrich the land.
Our state-of-the-art facilities are leading the industry in new environmental standards. From reducing phosphorus levels in manure to advancements in constructing environmentally sound buildings, we take pride in creating environmentally sound pork operations.
The Value of Manure
The natural cycle of having the crops nourish the animals and the animals nourish the crops makes pork production a great example of sustainable agriculture. In fact, many people believe crops should be fertilized only with animal manure. Manure fertilizers can completely displace chemical fertilizers in the crop system, and they are more biologically friendly and gentle. Manure fertilizer provides a broad complement of secondary and micronutrients, such as calcium, magnesium, sulfur, manganese, zinc, and boron. Perhaps most importantly, manure fertilizer contains organic matter that activates the soil biology, stimulates the nutrient cycle, improves soil structure and enhances soil water management.
